The Making of RAB’s Nutcracker...
The Magic Behind the Scenes

When the audience watches beautiful dancers on stage they often focus on the artistry and grace of the performance. This can be similar to looking at a clock; people admire the face but do not see the complex gears working behind the scenes. Much like a clock, the performance relies on many elements coming together in harmony. This hidden effort is what truly makes the production come alive even if the audience does not see it.

RAB is proud to have not only talented and dedicated students but also wonderful families who contribute their unique skills. These families go above and beyond what one might expect. Their involvement brings creativity and energy to our projects helping to make our shows truly come alive. Our families create a vibrant community that supports and inspires each other. Together they turn ideas into reality and make our shows even more special.

Behind the tiaras and whimsical headpieces, is Zhanna Carter. Her tiaras are one of a kind and create a glamorous effect on our dancers.

Behind the costumes and making sure every stitch is addressed, is Tiffany Ralston.

Tiffany has not only restored our costumes, but also created original works for our shows, such as the wolf head from Peter and the Wolf, to our stunning design of Orpheus's Tunic.

Kacey Bridges and Valerie Dodson contribute in making our costumes stand out. They pay close attention to every detail from the aprons we wear to the buttons that hold them together. Their creativity shines through in the appliques and hairpieces they design. Thanks to their hard work our costumes have reached a new level of beauty and style. In this season alone, over 6,000 rhinestones have been added to our costumes. Their efforts truly help every little detail sparkle and shine.

In Act 1, former Army Sergeant Adam Day plays a crucial role in transforming the Party Scene. He has created a unique method that allows the walls to float away one panel at a time. This clever design makes it seem as if the house is melting away revealing a beautiful snow scene. The effect captures the audience's imagination and adds a dreamlike quality to the performance. Adam's innovative approach enhances the overall experience making the scene both magical and memorable.

Adam Day’s family built everything from the ground up showing their creativity and hard work. The roof is especially impressive featuring over 1,000 shingles that they crafted by hand using a styrofoam cutter. Their efforts have truly transformed the room into a vibrant gathering place for Act 1 as well as creating a doll house like scene for the audience to enjoy.

What’s green and 21 feet tall?   Tonia Peake’s Christmas tree!!  The tree was created carefully by hand from machine-sewn strips of muslin fabric. The fabric was stained with three different shades of green paint to add depth and detail to the background. Each branch and ornament was also hand-painted ensuring that every piece looked unique. The size of the branches and ornaments gradually changed to show the tree's magical growth.  This thoughtful process made the tree a beautiful and enchanting work of art.
Did we mention it has 600 tree lights?

Making it snow on stage is one of the most magical moments of the Nutcracker Ballet. When former ballerina Tonia Peake has an idea, she embraces it with passion and determination.

The stage rigging clamps and lines present significant challenges because they involve basic principles of physics. Understanding how lever blocks and pulley systems work is essential for safe and effective rigging.

While the weight of the snow cradle even fully filled is only 20lbs, when it's under strain and stretched over blocks and pulleys that extend the entire width of the stage and into backstage, those lines are HEAVY and have to be checked before and after every show to make sure everything is in ship shape!

After a lot of physics, fixes, deep breathes, and prayers, magic truly unfolds on stage.

In addition to the beautifully handcrafted sleigh made by Gary and Sue Bardwell and the impressive design of the large toy box created by Bill Sutherland there are also unique handcrafted swords. These swords are made from a combination of iron and wood showcasing the skill and creativity of Josh Leavitt.  Each sword is crafted with care making them not only functional but also works of art. Including the Rat King Handle, complete with glowing red eyes.  The attention to detail in these pieces adds a special touch that makes them stand out. Overall these items reflect a commitment to quality and craftsmanship that is truly remarkable.

Behind the scenes of our show many people work hard to make it successful. Their efforts often go unnoticed but they are essential to creating a memorable experience. We appreciate all the families who contributed their time and energy to help make this show beautiful and enjoyable for everyone. Thank you for your support and dedication to our RAB community.
